The faculty assigned to teach classes in the Middelburg Center for Transatlantic Studies (MCTS) are expected to participate cooperatively with students, colleagues, and administrators in the formulation and maintenance of the collective social and academic standard of both the MCTS and their respective institutions. It is expected that the faculty will demonstrate the qualities of character, scholarship, and conduct commensurate with the standards established for the Middelburg Program. To assist in maintaining an atmosphere for standards of academic quality, the MCTS faculty are specifically expected to: - Participate fully in all aspects of the MCTS activities, especially in those connected with courses.
- Maintain a full schedule of classes and activities for each course equal to or exceeding academic standards set for the course on the home campus.
- Develop and utilize teaching strategies that encourage original work and reduce potential problems with academic honesty.
- Provide students with written information regarding course syllabi, academic honesty, academic standards, class activities, and grading practices in the beginning sessions of each class. Syllabi and policy statements must be handed to the students and Faculty Director by the end of the first day of class.
- Encourage consistent and regular attendance at all scheduled class meetings and class activities. Absentees should be reported to the Faculty Director or MCTS on-site director.
- Attend all MCTS faculty meetings where schedules, activities, and policies are established through careful coordination.
- Cooperate with students who experience special and legitimate problems resulting in the necessity of making up missed class assignments.
- Acknowledge that the administrative authority for the MCTS Program has been delegated to the On-Site and Faculty Directors who serve as the program supervisors for that enrollment period.
- Seek to incorporate as many activities as possible to enhance each course being taught in the Middelburg setting (ie. field trips).
- Devote some time to individual professional development while in Middelburg.
- Actively participate in the recruitment and orientation of students for the MCTS Program.
- Realize that the design of the MCTS provides many opportunities but also has restrictions and limitations. Faculty must adopt an attitude of cooperation and flexibility to contribute to a successful experience for all (ie. field trips).
- To submit final grades in a reasonable and timely manner after the last class period.
